Understanding Yamaha Part Numbers: A Complete Guide

Yamaha part numbers follow a consistent format that encodes crucial information about every part. Understanding this system is essential for finding the right replacement parts for your motorcycle.

The Format: XXX-XXXXX-XX-XX

Every Yamaha part number has four segments separated by dashes:

Segment 1 — Model Code: Identifies which motorcycle model or assembly the part was originally designed for. For example, "1WS" might indicate a YZF-R1 from a specific generation.

Segment 2 — Basic Code: This is the true identity of the part. The basic code tells you what the part actually is, regardless of which model it came from. This is the key to cross-referencing parts across different models.

Segment 3 — Design Revision: Shows the revision level. "00" is the original design, "01" is the first revision, and so on. Higher numbers mean the part was updated — usually for improvement or to fix a known issue.

Segment 4 — Color/Finish Code: Indicates the color or surface treatment. "00" typically means no specific color variant.

Why Basic Codes Matter

The basic code is the single most important piece of information in a Yamaha part number. Two parts with different model codes but the same basic code are functionally identical — they differ only in which bike they were originally cataloged for.

This is exactly how cross-referencing works: we look up the basic code and find every part number that shares it. This dramatically increases your chances of finding a compatible part in stock.

Hardware Parts: A Special Case

Parts starting with "9" are hardware (fasteners, bolts, etc.) and follow a different encoding scheme that specifies the fastener type, material, diameter, and length rather than a model code.

Tips for Buyers

  1. Always search by basic code, not just the full part number
  2. Check the revision level — newer revisions often supersede older ones
  3. If a part is superseded, our system automatically shows the replacement
  4. The model code helps confirm fitment but isn't the only factor

At Catalyst MX, our system automatically decodes, cross-references, and verifies every part number in our inventory. You can search by full part number, basic code, or description — and our fitment data ensures you get the right part for your bike.
